It may be easy to convince yourself that staying up an extra hour to wind down or catch a favourite show will be worth it. Maybe you wake up before the birds to run or beat your boss to the office.
In reality, though the best thing for your career could just be an extra hour of shut-eye.
1. Miss Less Work
One of the many health benefits of sleep is a solid immune system. Millions of bacteria come into contact with your skin every day, and many of those are malignant.
Sleep allows your body sufficient time to re-establish the barriers and defences it needs to stay healthy and function at top speed. Miss too much work and promotion day will slide further and further away.
2. Have Better Memory
Every part of your brain is healthier and runs faster with more sleep. Harvard Medical School claims that when we are sleep deprived, our focus, attention, and vigilance drift, making it more difficult to receive information.”
Not only will you have trouble focusing, you will have trouble remembering and making effective decisions.
Good employees are ones that learn fast, anticipate needs, and work quickly. Sleep deprivation will prevent all of those good things.
3. Be Less Susceptible to Depression
Harvard Medical School also found that people who reported insomnia were as likely to develop major depression over an extended period of time.
Symptoms of depression include fatigue, listlessness, lack of interest, and sullenness, all of which will severely inhibit your ability to be promoted.
4. Process Emotional Stress More Easily
REM sleep is good for more than just dreaming. REM sleep is when your body and mind process emotional distress in your life.
When unchecked, that emotional distress can keep you awake, further cheating your body of the time it needs to process.
It creates a cycle of physical and emotional exhaustion. Van Winkle’s reports that taking time at night to allow the body to heal will keeps the mind on-task and worry free.
Success comes in many forms and from many strategies, but make sure that sleep is always part of your game plan.
